Él no sabe que me he enterado’

Not the kind of father-son relationship that pretended eleven missing years had never happened.

Nothing could erase that.

They started with coffee.

Then phone calls.

Eventually, Richard helped Daniel assemble a crib and apparently installed one side backward.

Daniel sent me a picture.

I replied, “Some things are hereditary.”

He sent back, “Very funny.”

Seven months after graduation, Sophie gave birth to a little girl.

Her name is Nora.

I was in the waiting room.

So was Richard.

A year earlier, I couldn’t have imagined that.

But when Daniel finally came out, exhausted and crying, and said, “She’s here.”

Richard grabbed my shoulder.

I grabbed his.

For about ten seconds, we weren’t ex-spouses carrying years of resentment.

We were simply two grandparents losing our minds.

Later, Daniel apologized for asking me not to attend his graduation.

Ambas cosas eran ciertas.
